Theosophy and the Theosophical Movement

Theosophy is divine knowledge, the accumulated testimony and wisdom of all ages. It is the esoteric teaching that has existed on the planet ever since man became an intelligent being. All of the ancient texts illustrate such “Wisdom” as emanating from the Divine Principle. Theosophy is esoteric teaching and divine science and it is “the ally of every truth-bearing religion” since its verities constitute the basis of all creeds.

The most recent appearance of Theosophy came about in 1875 in the West through the “Theosophical Movement” founded by H.P.Blavatsky. H.S.Olcott  and William Q. Judge. Brotherhood of all beings, actual application of Virtues and  service towards our fellow-human beings without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or color ; such is the theosophical conviction.

Theosophy: What is it

Theosophy is the Ancient Wisdom that exists from time immemorial and expresses the accumulated wisdom of all ages being the spiritual Nucleus wherefrom emanates all knowledge related to intelligent life. It is the source of religions, metaphysical teachings, letters and art, learning, civilization and mainly of the mystic tradition. It is the esoteric Knowledge wherefrom sprang all the revelations that have taken, are taking and will be taking place in humanity, regarding the Laws of Evolution, man’s spiritual descent, occult history of mankind and the planet.

The Theosophical Movement

The Theosophical Movement was started by H.P. Blavatsky in New York, in 1875. At the outset, it was just a group pf researchers of spiritualistic and psychic phenomena. Pretty soon, however, after a few changes, emphasis was given to esoteric knowledge and the main task of the Movement, i.e. fraternity among people. On November 17, 1875, was founded the Theosphical Society; co-founders were Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (president), Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (secretary) and William Quan Judge, lawyer; three close friends and colleagues who agreed on spreading the Theosophical work.

The Masters of Wisdom

In the course of events that surround the history of Modern Theosophy, some were of paramount importance and turned out to be its most characteristic and decisive ones. In my opinion, particularly outstanding has been the appearance of the Spiritual Hierarchy and its leading presence in the Theosophical Movement. The Mahatmas appeared through their messenger, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky; an appearance marked as one of the most overwhelming events that occurred on our planet in the 19th century. Their presence is a milestone in human history, because it reflects both mankind’s regaining  touch with the invisible spiritual world and its becoming able, with the immeasurable help of a  messenger of its own, to perceive all or part of what the Hierarchy means to convey to it.

Theosophical Teaching

Ageless Theosophy, or else Wisdom-Religion, being the core of transcendental but also physical life, has always been the cradle of religions, philosophies, initiation and cultures in mankind. It is a mystic consideration of nature and human life and is founded on the testimonies given by Initiates, testimonies that do not contradict but complement one another.

It is from that core of Ageless Theosophy that, time and again, Initiates present a certain  constituent aspect to mankind – depending on the requirements of the given circumstances – aiming at the  moral restructuring and spiritual progress of human beings.

United Lodge of Theosophists

 Αthens ULT

The Athens-ULT [UNITED LODGE OF THEOSOPHISTS] belongs to the modern Theosophical Movement. It was formed by Robert Crosbie in 1909 and focuses on the study and dissemination of Theosophical teaching as it is recorded in H.P. Blavatsky’s and W.Ch. Judge’s writings.

 ULT Declaration

The policy of this Lodge is independent devotion to the cause of Theosophy, without professing attachment to any Theosophical organization. It is loyal to the great Founders of the Theosophical movement, but does not concern itself with dissensions or differences of individual opinion. The work it has on hand and the end it keeps in view are too absorbing and too lofty to leave it the time or inclination to take part in side issues. That work and that end is the dissemination of the fundamental principles of the Philosphy of Theosophy, and the exemplification in practice of those principles, through a truer realization of the SELF; a profounder conviction of Universal Brotherhood.
It holds that the unassailable basis for union among Theosophists, wherever and however situated, is “similarity of aim, purpose and teaching”, and therefore has neither Constitution, By-Laws nor Officers, the sole bond between its Associates being that basis. And it aims to disseminate this idea among Theosophists in the furtherance of Unity.
It regards as Theosophists all who are engaged in the true service of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, condition or organization, and It welcomes to its association all those who are in accord with its declared purposes and who desire to fit themselves, by study and otherwise, to be the better able to help and teach others.
The true Theosophist belongs to no cult or sect, yet belongs to each and all.”

Being in sympathy with the purposes of this Lodge, as set forth in its “Declaration,” I hereby record my desire to be enrolled as an Associate, it being understood that such association calls for no obligation on my part, other than that which I, myself, determine.

 1. To form the nucleus of a Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste, or color

 2. The study of ancient and modern religions, philosophies and sciences, and the demonstration of the importance of such study, and

 3. The investigation of the unexplained laws of Nature and the psychical powers latent in man.
